What is it

Human-centred design (HCD) is an approach to problem-solving and product development that prioritises the needs, experiences, and perspectives of the people who will use the final product or service. This design methodology aims to create solutions that are highly tailored to users by involving them in every stage of the design process. In human-centred design, designers and developers seek to deeply understand the target audience’s behaviours, preferences, and challenges, ensuring that the outcome not only meets functional requirements but also resonates emotionally with users. The human-centred design process is typically iterative and involves several key phases:

  • Empathise: Research and understand the needs, challenges, and desires of users by observing and engaging with them directly.
  • Define: Identify and articulate the core problem based on user insights gathered during the research phase.
  • Ideate: Brainstorm and develop potential solutions, often involving a diverse team to generate a broad range of ideas.
  • Prototype: Create simple, experimental versions of solutions to test ideas quickly and gather feedback.
  • Test: Evaluate prototypes with users, gather feedback, and refine the solutions as needed. This phase may loop back into earlier stages, as human-centred design is often cyclical and iterative.
